Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

This October, please help us share the unheard stories of families experiencing the physical and emotional devastation of miscarriage and early pregnancy loss by participating in our #AtLeast campaign.

Amongst your communities, there will be many that are holding the pain of losing their much wanted and loved babies. Society still often minimises the experience of early pregnancy loss and many families experience it in silence, isolation, and with a lack of support resources.

With your help, we can build a circle of support around these grieving families and help them honour the memory of their losses.

Why is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month so important?

1 in 3 women in Australia will suffer a pregnancy loss in their lifetime — that’s 283 women and their partners today that will lose a much wanted baby, amounting to more than 100,000 losses each year, nationwide.

And yet, in spite of this prolific health issue, which is proven to have severe and adverse mental health impacts, miscarriage is still not widely spoken about or given the funding for research and support services it so desperately needs.

What is #AtLeast?

Instead of feeling validated and supported during an early pregnancy loss, many families are faced with “at least” reactions from well-intentioned partners, family, friends and colleagues.

“At least it happened early”

“At least nature took its course”

“At least you are young and can try again”

“At least you already have other children”

“At least you know you can fall pregnant”

This year, to mark International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Pink Elephants is running an #AtLeast campaign on social media, encouraging women and families to share their experiences with hearing “at least” and encouraging society to learn better ways to support grieving families.

Saying “at least” to a person or family experiencing early pregnancy loss minimises their capacity to grieve — it’s an often well-intentioned but painful message to them that their grief is unimportant or unwarranted.

Such responses would not be acceptable when discussing any other kind of loss such as a stillbirth, or the death of a family member — and they should not be acceptable when discussing the loss of a much wanted baby.

We want to smash the narrative of #AtLeast so it becomes a socially unacceptable framework.

Help us spread the word!
